We're often getting asked about colour fade, and what are our best recommendations to slwo it down.
Our colourist Nicola has written a step by step guide for you all to follow.
STEP 1
USING THE RIGHT SHAMPOO

Using the right shampoo for your hair needs, can help your hair colour to last weeks longer and will keep it looking fresh and shiny.
Did you know?
Many shampoos can make your hair feel squeaky clean but tend to contain alkaline based ingredients such as Sodium Laurel Sulphate, which will open the hair cuticle and leave it
feeling dry, brittle and frizzy.
They can also make your freshly applied colour, wash out of the hair much faster. An acidic or
"PH balanced" shampoo will help to keep your hair soft and vibrant but still feel clean.
Make sure to choose a shampoo based on your hair type and needs;
•Tinted hair - Colour
Retaining
Course and/or dry hair -
Hydrating
Damaged hair - Bond Repair and Hydrating
STEP 2

DETOX OR CLARIFYING SHAMPOOS
Other factors that can affect hair colour, are pollution, chlorine and hard water (which often also contains microscopic metals, that build up in the hair and can make your colour dull or change it to an
undesirable shade).
These metals can create a barrier around the hair, causing hair colour to soak in unevenly when you go for your next colour appointment. They can also make your hair feel rougher and drier,
causing the colour to fade faster.
A weekly or biweekly detoxing or chelating shampoo will help to remove metal and product buildup and keep your colour looking bright.
Investing in a shower filter, such as the Hello Klean shower head can also help reduce the metals in your water and soften it.

CONDITIONERS OR MASKS
The main difference between a mask and a conditioner, is that masks tend to have a higher concentration of ingredients and more butters and oils and so they only need to be used a few
Typically the focus should be on either light hydration (fine hair) or heavy hydration (course or very dry hair) and/or bond repair for damaged hair.
Did you know?
Some conditioners can contain silicones, which will make you hair feel soft and shiny but can often create a buildup of product and can stop other products you apply afterwards from hydrating or repairing your hair effectively.
STEP 4
COLOUR REFRESH OR TONING MASKS

This step only needs to be done a few times a month, to help neutralise any unwanted warmth or to refresh the colour once it fades.
For blondes, a purple conditioner will help to keep your blonde from going too yellow and for medium to light brown hair, you can use a blue conditioner to neutralise any orange tones.
There are also several brands that offer different shades of coloured conditioner, that help to refresh you colour in between appointments.

And Finally
we highly recommend using leave in treatment sprays as general everyday protectants.
They help prevent breakage, hydrate the hair, keep the hair soft, shiny and easy to comb, help to combat frizz, and have heat protection up to 230°C (446 °F), plus the Davines Su Milk provides UV protection which helps to prevent colour fade from the sun.
